The Ije, also known as the Holi or Ohori, are a Yoruba-related people living primarily in southeastern Benin. They belong to the larger Yoruba cultural family but have maintained their own language and distinct identity through generations of life among neighboring peoples. Their language, Ede Ije, is one of several Yoruba language varieties spoken in Benin.
Living near important trade routes and neighboring ethnic groups has allowed the Ije to preserve many of their traditions while also adapting to changing political and economic conditions. Although they share many customs with other Yoruba peoples, they continue to maintain a strong local identity rooted in their own history and community life.
The Ije primarily live in rural and semi-rural communities where agriculture, local markets, and family life shape everyday activities. Like neighboring peoples, many families likely cultivate staple crops, raise livestock on a small scale, and participate in local trade.
Extended families are central to community life and provide support across generations. The Ije are also known for traditional facial markings and tattoos, particularly among women, which have historically expressed identity, beauty, and belonging. Community ceremonies and local customs continue to reinforce social relationships and cultural values.
The Ije have traditionally practiced ethnic religions closely related to the wider spiritual traditions of the Yoruba peoples. These beliefs often include reverence for ancestors, respect for spiritual beings, and ceremonies connected to healing, protection, and community life.
Some communities have been influenced by Christianity and Islam through contact with neighboring peoples. Even so, traditional beliefs continue to influence many aspects of daily life. Those who choose to follow Christ benefit from discipleship that helps them place their confidence fully in him.
The Ije need greater access to biblical teaching in the language and cultural setting they understand best. Strong local churches and mature Christian leaders can help believers grow in their faith while lovingly addressing questions that arise from traditional religious practices.
Communities also benefit from educational opportunities, economic development, and ministries that demonstrate Christ's compassion through practical service.
Pray that the Ije will clearly understand the message of the gospel.
Pray that believers will place their trust completely in Jesus Christ.
Pray for local Christian leaders who will faithfully teach God's word.
Pray that scripture and Christian resources will become increasingly available in Ede Ije.
Pray for them to become Christ's ambassadors to gospel-starved peoples in Africa.
Pray for revival fire to move powerfully in Ije families and churches.
